Accessibility
Last reviewed May 22, 2026
The Mālamalama Center program is for the whole community. We want this platform to be usable by everyone, including people who rely on assistive technology.
Our commitment
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA across the platform. Accessibility is a feature, not an afterthought, and we treat it as part of the basic work of building this app.
What we've done
- Body text is at least 14 pixels; touch targets on mobile are at least 44 pixels.
- Color and contrast use a semantic-token system so palette decisions stay consistent and meet the AA contrast target.
- Every form field has an accessible name; error messages are tied to their field and announced to screen readers.
- Interactive lesson activities (quiz, reading passage, match) announce selection, progress, and result through screen-reader live regions, and remain operable with a keyboard alone.
- Pages have a clear heading hierarchy, a skip-to-content link, and visible keyboard focus rings.
- Forms are forgiving: submit stays enabled, errors appear next to the field, and the first error is focused so you can fix it without hunting.
Where we still have work
We have not yet had a full independent accessibility audit. Some parts of the experience — particularly the drag-pair model in the match activity, and a small number of older admin screens — may have rough edges for assistive-technology users. We are actively working to close these gaps and we list known issues in our public audit notes.
Compatible technologies
We test with current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, and with VoiceOver (macOS / iOS) and NVDA (Windows). Mobile Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android are first-class. If you use a different combination and something is not working, please tell us.
How to report an issue or request help
If you cannot access something on this platform, or you have a suggestion for making it more usable, email info@malamalama.org or call (808) 633-3032. Please include the page you were on, the device and software you were using, and what you were trying to do. We aim to reply within two business days.
